Glipizide is a hypoglycemic agent for non-insulin-dependent (type II) diabetes. Glipizide can promote the secretion of insulin by pancreatic islet β cells, enhance the effect of insulin on target tissues, and it can also inhibit the secretion of glucagon by pancreatic islet α cells, inhibit the decomposition of liver glycogen, promote muscle utilization and glucose consumption.
