Amifostine is an organic thiophosphate cytoprotective agent known chemically as 2-[(3-aminopropyl)amino]ethanethiol dihydrogen phosphate (ester). It is used to help lessen the side effects of certain cancer chemotherapy medications or radiation treatment, protect the kidneys from harmful effects caused by cisplatin when given to patients with ovarian cancer, prevent severe dry mouth caused by radiation treatment of the head and neck, which can affect the salivary gland, also decrease the risk of kidney problems caused by treatment with a certain anti-cancer drug. It is also used to help prevent a certain side effect caused by radiation treatment for head and neck cancer.
