Tryptamine is used as a pharmaceutical intermediate. Tryptamine is a monoamine alkaloid found in plants, animals, and fungi that contains an indole nucleus and is structurally similar to tryptophan (missing a carboxyl group) and hence the name. It is present in trace amounts in the mammalian brain and is thought to play a role as a neuromodulator and neurotransmitter.
