Mirtazapine blocks α-adrenergic receptors in NAergic neurons, somas and nerve endings. The former enhances the firing activity of NAergic neuron endings, while the latter enhances the release of NAergic neuron endings NAergic neuronal endings, because NAergic neurons also project to the gap nucleus where 5-HTergic neurons are located, mirtazapine increases NA release by blocking NAergic neurons α2-adrenergic receptors, NA acts on α1-adrenergic receptors on the cell body of 5-HTergic neurons, thereby enhancing 5-HTergic neuron firing and increasing nerve endings 5-HT release.
