Ampicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic that is clinically used to treat or prevent bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, gonorrhea, meningitis, salmonella infections, and endocarditis, often used with sulbactam to enhance the therapeutic effect against bacteria that produce β-lactamase. Ampicillin hinders the third and final stages of bacterial synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins on the bacterial cell wall, eventually causing cell lysis.
Ampicillin/Ampicillin Trihydrate belongs to the genus synthetic penicillin. Ampicillin has a wide antibacterial spectrum, and it has a bactericidal effect on both gram-positive and negative bacteria.
