Candesartan cilexetil is used in the treatment of hypertension. Candesartan cilexetil is rapidly hydrolyzed in vivo into the active metabolite candesartan, which is a selective angiotensin II receptor (AT1) antagonist to angiotensin II by binding to the AT1 receptor of vascular smooth muscle, thereby reducing peripheral vascular resistance.
