Cefradine is used to treat acute pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections caused by sensitive bacteria, genitourinary tract infections and skin and soft tissue infections.
Cefradine achieves bactericidal effect by binding to one or more penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in bacterial cells and inhibiting cell wall synthesis in bacterial dividing cells. One of the mechanisms by which cefradine inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis is to make bacteria synthesize defective cell walls with unstable permeability; The second mechanism may be an inhibitor of cell wall hydrolases required for cell division, which in turn promotes bacterial cell wall disintegration.
