Glatiramer acetate is a synthetic analogue of myelin basic protein and an immunomodulator that can be used in the study of multiple sclerosis. Glatiramer acetate shows strong and messy binding to MHC molecules, thus competing with various myelin antigens to present to T cells. Another aspect of the action of glatiramer acetate is to effectively induce specific inhibitory cells of T helper cell 2 (Th2) to migrate to the brain and lead to bystander inhibition in situ.
