Mebendazole has the effect of completely killing hookworm eggs and whipworm eggs and partially killing roundworm eggs, has a strong affinity for the β-tubulin of the worm body, and can bind to it at a very low concentration, which can inhibit the polymerization of its microtubules by affecting the metabolism of worm carbohydrates and related energy production, causing the disappearance of the epidermis or intestinal cells of the worm body, selectively and irreversibly inhibiting the intestinal intake of glucose and other nutrients from the intestine, and finally leading to the death of the worm. Mebendazole is suitable for the treatment of human and animal infections caused by single or multiple helminths such as whipworm, pinworm, hookworm, tapeworm, strongyloids stercoralis and roundworm, but is ineffective for hydatidosis.
