Reserpine is widely used in the treatment of mild and moderate hypertension.
The hypotensive effect of reserpine is associated with the depletion of intravesicle transmitters of central and peripheral adrenergic nerve endings. The antihypertensive mechanism of reserpine occurs by depleting the sympathetic mediator (norepinephrine) in the sympathetic terminal vesicles, blocking the conduction of sympathetic impulses. Reserpine is characterized by slow, mild and long-lasting, and is suitable for mild to moderate early hypertension, especially hypertension caused by acute nephritis.
