Sertaconazole nitrate is a novel, broad-spectrum, highly effective topical antifungal drug.
Sertaconazole nitrate has two main effects on the fungal cell wall. On the one hand, like other imidazole antifungals, sertaconazole nitrate produces antifungal effects by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol in the fungal cell wall. On the other hand, it adds a unique lipophilic benzothiophene ring structure to its structure, which improves the penetration ability of its skin stratum corneum without systematic absorption, the structure is similar to the indole ring in tryptophan, taking advantage of the fungal need for tryptophan, sertaconazole nitrate can replace tryptophan, resulting in channels and micropores on the fungal cell membrane, affecting the permeability of the fungal cell membrane. The result of the combined action of the two causes the leakage of intracellular substances, such as adenosine triphosphate and other substances very important for fungal survival, which quickly causes fungal cell death.
