Telmisartan is a novel blood pressure lowering drug used to treat essential hypertension.
Telmisartan inhibits vasoconstriction and aldosterone release by selectively blocking the binding of Ang II to AT1 receptors, producing antihypertensive effects. Telmisartan does not inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), renin, other hormone receptors, nor does it inhibit ion channels involved in blood pressure regulation and sodium balance.
