Tiopronin is mainly used to treat acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcoholic liver injury and drug-induced liver injury, and can also be used for metal poisoning, chemotherapy and radiotherapy protection, urticaria, dermatitis, eczema and acne.
Tiopronin is a sulfhydryl drug with similar properties to penicillamine and has the effect of protecting liver tissues and cells. Tiopronin can prevent liver damage caused by ethionine, acetaminophen, etc. by providing sulfhydryl groups, and inhibit the accumulation of triglycerides in chronic liver damage. Tiopronin can reduce the activity of ATPase in the mitochondria of hepatocytes, thereby protecting the mitochondrial structure of the liver and improving liver function. In addition, thiopronin can also scavenge free radicals through the reversible binding of sulfhydryl radicals to free radicals.
