Valsartan is used in the treatment of hypertension as well as congestive heart failure.
Valsartan plays a key role in regulating systemic blood pressure and maintaining electrolyte fluid balance. It selectively acts on the AT1 receptor subtype, blocks the binding of Ang II to AT1 receptor, thereby inhibiting vasoconstriction and aldosterone release, producing antihypertensive effect, but does not inhibit the release of aldosterone caused by potassium ions (K+). Valsartan is suitable for the treatment of antihypertensive, mild to moderate essential hypertension, especially for secondary hypertension caused by kidney damage, can significantly reduce proteinuria in patients with hypertension with diabetes or normal renal function, and has a renal protective effect that promotes the excretion of uric acid and urine sodium. Valsartan is also indicated to reduce cardiovascular mortality in patients at high risk of heart attack (left ventricular failure or left ventricular dysfunction).
