Carbenicillin disodium is a semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotic that interferes with the synthesis of gram-negative bacterial cell walls and has low toxicity.
Carbenicillin disodium is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic with antibacterial effects against Enterobacteriaceae such as Escherichia coli, Proteus, Enterobacteriaceae, Citrobacter, Salmonella and Shigella, as well as other gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, and Neisseria. It also has antibacterial activity against hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus and staphylococci that do not produce penicillinase. Carbenicillin disodium inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell walls by inactivating transpeptidases at the inner level of bacterial cell membranes.
