Cefdinir is used for mild and moderate infections caused by susceptible bacteria, such as socially acquired pneumonia, acute onset of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections, etc.
Cefdinir has a wide antibacterial spectrum against gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria, especially for staphylococcus and streptococcus in gram-positive bacteria, which has stronger antibacterial activity than previous oral cephalosporins, and its mode of action is bactericidal. Cefdinir is stable to β-lactamases produced by various bacteria and has excellent antibacterial activity against β-lactamase-producing bacteria. Cefdinir's mechanism of action is to block the synthesis of bacterial cell walls.

Cefdinir is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, meaning it is effective against a wide range of bacteria. Doctors prescribe it for many common infections, including:
Upper Respiratory Infections:
Community-acquired pneumonia
Acute bacterial sinusitis
Strep throat (pharyngitis/tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes)
Acute bacterial otitis media (middle ear infection)
Skin and Soft Tissue Infections:
Uncomplicated skin infections like impetigo and cellulitis caused by specific bacteria.
Lower Respiratory Infections:
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis (flare-ups in people with chronic bronchitis)
Other Infections:
It may also be used for other infections as determined by a doctor, based on the specific bacteria suspected.
Crucial Note: Cefdinir is only effective against bacterial infections. It does not work for viral infections like the common cold, flu, or most cases of acute bronchitis.
Do not take cefdinir if you are allergic to it or any other cephalosporin antibiotic (e.g., cephalexin, cefuroxime).
Cross-reactivity: There is a chance of cross-allergenicity with penicillin antibiotics. If you have a known severe allergy to penicillin, you must inform your doctor before taking cefdinir.
While many people take it without issue, common side effects can include:
Diarrhea (this is the most common)
Nausea or vomiting
Headache
Vaginal yeast infection
Abdominal pain
Severe diarrhea (which could be a sign of a C. diff infection)
Watery or bloody stools
Allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing)
Unusual tiredness or weakness
Dark urine or yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice), which could indicate liver problems
Unusual bleeding or bruising
Antacids containing magnesium or aluminum (e.g., Maalox®, Mylanta®) and iron supplements can significantly reduce the absorption of cefdinir. It is recommended to take cefdinir at least 2 hours before or after taking these products.
Probenecid (a gout medication) can increase the level of cefdinir in your blood.
Always tell your doctor about all other medications and supplements you are taking.
Cefdinir can interact with iron, causing a harmless but alarming side effect: the stool may turn a reddish-orange color. This is not blood and is not harmful. It can also cause a red discoloration of diapers in infants taking the liquid suspension.
