Perindopril erbumine is used to treat conditions such as hypertension and congestive heart failure.
Perindopril erbumine is an inhibitor of an enzyme that converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II (angiotensin-converting enzyme). This invertase or kinase is a peptide chain terminal lyase that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin Il, which constricts blood vessels, and it also degrades bradykinin, which relaxes blood vessels, into inactive heptapeptides. Inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme leads to a decrease in angiotensin II in plasma, which can lead to increased plasma renin activity (by inhibiting negative feedback of renin release) and reduce aldosterone secretion. Because angiotensin-converting enzyme inactivates bradykinin, angiotense inversion inhibition also increases the activity of the circulating and local kallikrein-kallin system (and thus the prostaglandin system).
